Third Course - Big is Beefy

While the official figure is about 240 million, no one really knows how many pies Australians eat east year. John Ross, the co-founder of the Great Aussie Pie Competition, said, ‘We did a survey four years ago and the figure was over half a billion.

‘Men are really into them; women are slightly more restrained and many prefer the specialty lines. While the plain steak pie is still the overwhelming favourite there’s a lot of support for varieties,’ he said. ‘This is the big growth area, especially the gourmet pie.’

In Queensland and NSW, for example, there’s a marked preference for Steak and Mushrooms; in Victoria they tend toward Steak and Onions; while in Tasmania Steak and Kidney is particularly popular.

South Australians have their own idiosyncratic invention – the floater, a regular pie that swims in a lake of pea soup. The ACT has more pie shops per head of population than anywhere else in Australia; and in Western Australia and the Northern Territory both local and interstate pies vie for the consumer’s loyalty.

But in recent years as the industry has diversified the great mass producers like, Mrs Mac’s, Four n’ Twenty, Sergeants, Big Ben and others have returned to Australian ownership. This has brought a renewed sense of pride in the actual pie produced.
